Your Eyesight During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, many women experience changes in their eyesight. Are you one of them? You may find that your contact lenses aren’t quite doing the trick. Or maybe you’re having a harder time focusing on things far away.

Most Changes Are Normal And Will Go Away

Many of these subtle changes can be attributed to swelling and fluid retention, which can slightly change the shape of your eyes. During pregnancy, you may also experience dry eyes, and increased sensitivity in your eyes, due to hormone fluctuations.

For most women, all of this will go away a month or so after delivery.

But Some Changes Are Warnings Of More Serious Conditions

The two conditions listed below can be detected during an eye exam, giving us enough warning to take action against any problems these conditions may present during your pregnancy. Vision complications can also be an early sign of Preeclampsia, a serious condition that can endanger you and your child.

  • In the U.S., 135,000 pregnant women suffer from gestational diabetes
  • 1 in 14 pregnant women experience pregnancy-induced hypertension

Let us know if you experience any of the following:

  • blurred vision
  • tunnel vision
  • distorted vision
  • extremely dry eyes

Comprehensive Eye Exams Are Recommended During Pregnancy

Eye exams are an important part of monitoring your health during pregnancy. Examining your eyes can give us a view into what’s going on throughout your body, and can help us help you maintain overall, optimal health.
